What is Salwar Kameez?
Salwar Kameez is the traditional outfit for women in Indo Pak Sub Continent. Indian prefer to spell it as Salwar Kameez whereas the Pakistani prefer to spell it as Shalwar Kamiz. Salwar or shalwar means a Baggy pant & Kameez means a Tunic top. Every area has a distinct style of this outfit which depicting the culture & tradition of that area. These dresses are beng created in different variations by designers using a variety of fabrics emphasising on the practicality of the outfit that suit all age groups. The different styling variation are Kurta Shalwar, Salwar Suits, Punjabi Suits, Churidar, Lehnga, Lacha, Chania, Chooli, Sharara, Gharara, Peshwas, Patiala Suit, Hyderabadi Suit, Lakhnowi Suit, Baluchi Suit, Sindhi Suit etc.
The upper half is known as Kameez, Kamiz or Kurta as per the region and design. The lower half is stiched in touser like baggy shape pants known as Salwar, Shalwar or if it is a straight one then it is called straight salwar. Normally Kameez (Kamiz) covers the upper body area uptill knees. Ther is variation is length of Kameez (Kamiz) according to region, style and fabric. Where as the Salwar (Shalwar) comes uptil ankles. The bottom opening have various styles like bell-bottoms, qlots, churidaar, flat trousers with and withour slits. Salwar Kameez (Shalwar Kamiz) is the major dress code in the north west part of India and Indian Punjab therefore, it is also known as Punjabi Dress or Punjabi Suits.
